Hola, yo soy Pedro, tengo 18 años y estudio un grado medio de navegación y pesca del litoral. Soy Español , de Cartagena. Como parte de mis estudios, me dieron la oportunidad de realizar las prácticas en el Alexander von Humboldt II y pensé que seria una muy buena idea para aprender a navegar a vela y a saber convivir en un barco durante 2 meses. Me lo pensé mucho para venir, ya que mi nivel de inglés es muy bajo y no sabía nada de alemán. Al final llegué a la conclusión que seria una buena manera de aprender idiomas.
Al principio estaba algo perdido en el barco. No entendia a la gente y ellos a mi tampoco. No sabía cuando era mi guardia, ni horarios, ni nada. Poco a poco fuí cogiendo el ritmo. Tenía la guardia de 4-8 horas. Al principio estaba muy contento: se podia ver el amanecer bajo un cielo estrellado. Conforme fué pasando el tiempo, me costaba levantarme, pasaba mucho frio, e, iba muy cansado. Los compañeros me ayudaban mucho. Si no sabia algo, me lo explicaban una y otra vez.
En el actual turno mi guardia es de 0-4. Ahora estoy más contento, no voy cansado y hace mejor tiempo. Mi estancia aqui es, generalmente, muy buena, se realizan muchas maniobras, me han dejado conducir la lancha pequeña, te enseñan mucho. He aprendido a tomar nuestra posición en alta mar con instrumentos como radar, carta electrónica y carta de papel.
Me parece una experiencia muy bonita y muy interesante de vivir a la vez que inolvidable, muy buen trato con los oficiales, el capitán y con todos… en general para repetir!
La parte que más me gusta es cuando hay que subir a los palos. Me gustan mucho las alturas y ademas, nunca antes había navegado en un barco de vela.
He conocido a un par de personas que hablan un poco de español y eso me ayuda bastante.
Estoy seguro de que volveré a repetir esta experiencia, pero, a poder ser, cuando el Alex II vaya a España, con buen tiempo, sol y calor, ademas de algún español más!

Hello, I‘m Pedro, I‘m 18 years old and I study nautical seamanship and coastal fishing at a vocational school. I‘m from Cartagena, in Spain. As part of my studies, I got the chance to intern at the ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT II. I thought that it would be a very good idea to learn to sail on a sailing ship including living there with so many people for two months. I had some doubts to come because my English is a little weak and I didn’t know any German. Finally, I decided to come that it would be a great opportunity to learn languages.
In the beginning, I was a bit lost on the ship. Neither did I understand the others nor did they understand me. I didn’t know when my watch was, what the schedule on board is like, nothing. Slowly, I adapted. I was in the 4-8 watch. First, I was very happy: you could see the sunrise below a sky full of stars. With the time passing, it became more difficult for me to get up, I froze a lot and was very sleepy. However, my crewmates helped me a lot. Whenever I didn’t understand something, they explained it to me again and again.
During the current journey, I am in the 0-4 watch. I like it better, and I’m not that sleepy any more. Also, the weather is much better. In general, my stay on board is very good. We are sailing a lot of maneuvers, I could steer one of the boats. Everybody has a lot of knowledge to share. I learned how to localize our position in the open sea with instruments like radar, electrical maps and old style paper maps.
I think, it is a beautiful experience, very interesting and unforgettable. The captain, the officials and everybody is very nice. I would love to repeat it and would recommend it to everybody.
What I like the most, is to climb up the masts. I like heights and never before have sailed on a sailing ship.
I got to know a few people who speak some Spanish what is helping me a lot.
I am sure that I will come back for another journey but, preferably, when the Alex II will visit Spain: With better, sunnier and warmer weather, as well as some other Spanish person.
