We spent a truly wonderful and meaningful time in Suriname. The jungle offered space to slow down, relax, and recharge. During our visit, we explored a village rooted in Maroon culture, where descendants of African slaves who escaped plantations and forged lives defined by resilience, sustainability, and strong community ties deep within the jungle.
We learned how these communities adapted swiftly to a challenging and unfamiliar environment, drawing knowledge from Indigenous cultures to survive and thrive. Students gained hands-on experience in jungle survival, learning which plants provide drinkable water and nourishment, and discovering an important lesson: even in the most remote places, you are never truly alone.
Back aboard, students have been studying diligently in preparation for their oral and final course exams and enjoyed a hot shower. We are adapting quickly back to life at sea and feeling that the Alex-2 truly is a home we are happy to come back to.
