Dear Family and Friends,

Today was what we call a “pleasant surprise!” Besides regular classes, colors, and watches we also had a Muster drill at 1300hrs. In a muster situation, all crew aboard the Alex II must immediately stop whatever they’re doing, grab their immersion suits and life jackets, then quickly file into formation on the main deck. You just have to pray you’re not in the shower when those 7 blaring short rings and 1 long blast go out (yes, it’s happened before…). In best cases we can manage this mustering process in under 5 minutes. This time, once we were all together, we also got to try out the fire hoses on deck – wielding them like mighty warriors 3-4 people at a time. Other amazing things that happened today were the terrific tortellini we had for lunch, the 04-08 watch setting a new sailing speed record of 10 kn, and even a couple of exciting dolphin sightings! All in all, for most people I can say that today was a good one, full of unexpected but enjoyable events; in other words, a pleasant surprise.

Best of Wishes

Grace
