Dear friends and family,
Happy Pi Day! For those who may not celebrate, Pi Day falls on March 14th (3.14) representing π. For me, I’ve been waiting for this all year….
I’d like to give a shout-out to my fantastic math students for bringing such great enthusiasm to the celebrations. The festivities began in math class, where Pre-Calculus 11 students created a paper chain of Pi decimals and challenged themselves to memorize 100 digits of Pi. Meanwhile, Calculus 12 students carried out Buffon’s Needle Experiment and enjoyed a few rounds of Pi UNO.
The main event of Pi Day took place at 3:14 pm (of course!), when a crowd gathered in the mess for the Pi reciting competition. Students and faculty competed in multiple languages: English, French, German, Spanish, and Chinese—to see who would be crowned the Pi Prince or Princess.
The results were:
- German Champion: Luca L
- Spanish Champion: Mauricio
- Chinese Champion: Ynez
- French Champion: Sydnie
- Russian Champion: Faya (also runner-up overall with an impressive 161 digits)
Our overall winner and Pi Princess was Grace, who amazed everyone by reciting 210 digits of Pi!
In other news, the Mario Kart tournament got underway, and whales and dolphins were spotted passing by. Yoga Club also took place.
There was another surprise this morning when the lookout spotted an old floating life ring. The crew, along with Anya, retrieved it using the MOB boat. Judging by the barnacles and mussels growing on it, it had clearly been in the water for quite some time. Jacquie particularly enjoyed observing them afterwards in a bucket on deck as they were “actively filter feeding.”
Today was also “Dolphin Day,” a well-earned day off for students and faculty. Many took the opportunity to rest and recharge during these final days of our Atlantic crossing to the Azores. Excitement is building as we look forward to arriving and seeing friends and family ashore.
Before signing off, I’d like to send a special shout-out to my wonderful family and friends back home and wish them an early Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh! (Happy St. Patrick’s Day) and a Happy Mothers Day today (in Ireland) to my wonderful Mammy- I love you!
Faculty member Jacquie would also like to wish her parents, Jan and John Lesser, a very happy birthday for the past week.
Until next time,
Orla
