Yesterday we awoke to the silhouette of Dominica hidden behind fog and a rain cloud.

As we arrived at our berth into Portsmouth harbour, the green mountains emerged and that’s when I realized this country was going to be my favorite place. In the morning our routine went as usual— cabin cleans and checks were complete, gangway schedules filled out, and chores wrapped up. Then we had shore leave for the remainder of the day. Different groups spent the day at the beaches and going on hikes to see waterfalls.

We all returned to Alex2 for dinner -delicious fried rice generously prepared by students Roland and Tiger.

After dinner we gathered in our new watches to check in, connect about the changes that a new semester brings, and remember friends and crewmates from semester 1.

We finished the evening with a viewing of Around Cape Horn to inspire us to give generously of our time and talents to the ship, and each other.

I can confidently say this is the most beautiful country I’ve ever been to. Dominica is the perfect place to start our second Semester of Class Afloat.
